Bree Bynum’s career path was shaped by the desire to make a difference during what can be one of the most challenging times in a person’s life—cancer treatment. Growing up, she witnessed her aunt's battle with cancer and the impact the radiation therapists had on her aunt’s care.

"My aunt went through cancer treatment, and she always spoke about the kindness of her radiation therapists," Bree said. "That made all the difference for her. I wanted to be that person for someone else."

This desire to provide a comforting presence during a patients’ cancer treatment led Bree to pursue a career in radiation therapy. It was during her clinical rotations at Duke University Hospital, as part of her radiation therapy training, that she first felt a connection to the culture at Duke Health. The supportive environment she experienced during her rotations solidified her desire to return to Duke Health after graduation.

“My time at Duke during my clinical rotations was nothing short of transformative,” Bree said. “The environment was so supportive and welcoming, and that experience left a lasting impression on me. I knew this was where I wanted to work.”

Upon graduating in May 2024, Bree accepted her first full-time role as a radiation therapist here treating patients with various types of cancer.
“My leaders and teammates truly made my onboarding process seamless,” she said. “They were always there to check in, to guide me, and to ensure that I was confident in my role. I am forever grateful for their support.”

She remains dedicated to the purpose that brought her to the field in the first place—being that smiling face, the one that brings light into the darkest of days.

“It's a privilege to support patients through the challenges of cancer treatment,” said Bree. “It's incredibly fulfilling to be able to offer them not just treatment but a sense of joy and connection as they come for their daily sessions. I want them to feel seen, heard, and comfortable. And it's especially moving to celebrate with them when they complete their journey. Seeing someone ring the bell at the end of treatment always brings tears to my eyes.”
