General Description of the Job Class
Perform a variety of tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of imaging and imaging related equipment as defined by equipment involved in the treatment, care, diagnosis and monitoring of patients.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Duties and Responsibilities of Level I: Perform a variety of routine tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and imaging related clinical equipment, typically non-life support. Perform electrical safety tests on clinical equipment using specialized test equipment.
Assist in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program Perform incoming inspections and complete documentation on clinical equipment. Deactivate obsolete equipment and use surplus and salvage protocols for removal.
Serve as a resource to Duke University Heath System employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
Notify user departments regarding status of repair requests that have not been completed. Effectively communicates with clinical departments to obtain loaner or replacement equipment as required.
Report all patient safety issues to supervisor or manager and assist with correction of issue as assigned.
Meet individual and team departmental performance standards on a consistent basis.
Answer phones in a pleasant manner, screen and refer calls as appropriate; deliver messages and provide information to staff, visitors, and patients, upon request.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
Demonstrate initiative and concern for planning, time utilization, and cost containment.
Maintain good working relationships with fellow workers, nursing and medical staff, and the general public.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation with Department policy. Maintain a clean and safe work place.
May require travel to other Health System facilities as required to perform departmental functions.
Complete all required Health System training modules within the time allowed by policy.
May be required to be on-call and respond per department policy. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Examples of devices assigned for maintenance are: Portable X-Ray, C-Arm, Injectors, Work Stations, General Rad Rooms
Duties and Responsibilities of Level II
Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Level I plus:
Consistently perform both routine and complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and imaging related clinical equipment.
Perform independently in both routine and complex tasks. Must be able to prioritize work and initiate new work and tasks.
Consistently work with end users to ???clinically??? troubleshoot a problem and be able to identify solutions for resolution.
Must be proficient with prioritizing work assignments effectively in order to meet Departmental goals and standards.
Provide mentoring and precepting to Level I technicians.
Serve as a resource to Duke University Heath System employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
Assist in identifying and recommending replacement of equipment that is obsolete, has extensive repair history, or has identified safety issues Participate in committees as required.
Coordinate inspection and installation of incoming equipment as required.
May be required to coordinate the work performed by service contractors and vendors to include maintenance, calibration, installation and verification of service documentation.
With limited supervision, coordinate and manage both routine and complex projects from start to completion, performing any necessary communication and follow-up with department.
Assist with conducting evaluations of equipment as required.
When assigned, participate in Device Incident Investigation process and provide follow up to management per Department policy.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Examples of devices assigned for maintenance are: Ultrasound, General Radiographic, R&F, CR
Duties and Responsibilities of Level III
Perform all duties and responsibilities of Level I & II plus:
Consistently perform a variety of routine, complex and specialized tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of imaging and imaging related clinical equipment.
May be required to specialize on various types or systems of clinical equipment at this level, requiring specific training and / or certification.
Provide mentoring and precepting to Level I & II technicians Must be a technical resource to clinical staff concerning all patient interface issues.
Conduct departmental training sessions as required covering safe operation and maintenance of equipment for Level I & II technicians. Assist departments with developing technical specifications for equipment purchases.
Routinely and independently coordinate and manage projects, both routine and complex, from start to completion, performing any necessary communication and follow-up with department.
Provide leadership and prioritization of work in absence of Team Lead or manager.
May serve as a Team Lead and be required to monitor throughout the month completion status of correctives, preventives and new equipment inspections for their assigned team, reassign individual responsibilities as required to obtain departmental goals.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Examples of devices assigned for maintenance are: Nuclear Medicine, CT, MRI, Rad/ Onc, I/R

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:    Associates Degree in Electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology is required.
Two years of military training in clinical equipment or vocational training in electronics may substitute for the degree requirement.

Experience:    Level I
No experience required, beyond degree/military/vocational training described above
Level II
Requires a minimum of two years of experience as an Imaging Engineer, preferably in a healthcare setting.
Level III
Requires a minimum of five years experience as an Imaging Engineer. CRES certification and/or manufacturer and modality specific OEM training may substitute for two years of experience.

A valid North Carolina Driver???s license with a good driving record
Level II
Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CRES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation)
Level III
Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CRES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:    Level I
Maintenance skills in electronics, mechanical or electromechanical device repair.
Knowledge of electronics troubleshooting.
Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral instructions. Ability to work without direct supervision.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, clinical and medical staff, and the general public.
Ability to demonstrate competency in the use and operation of all required test equipment.
An elementary knowledge of e-mail, database management, spreadsheet, and word processor applications.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary.
Ability to function in a sterile environment if necessary.
Ability to keep neat and accurate records.
Must be willing to be multi-task trained.
Must be able to carry call for team or workgroup, respond according to policy, and make decisions regarding emergency equipment repair.
Level II- All of Level I, plus the following:
Capable of mentoring Level I technicians
Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and illustrated parts drawings of biomedical instrumentation.
Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment, both technically and clinically.
Significant working knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology.
Significant knowledge and experience with Departmental software (e-mail, database management, spreadsheet, and word processor applications).
Level III- All of Levels I & II, plus the following:
Ability to supervise and mentor Level I and II technicians.
Ability to coordinate complex projects and prioritize tasks.
Significant knowledge of Duke University Health System and departmental policies and procedures.
Possesses advanced knowledge of codes, standards and compliance issues relating to the Clinical Engineering profession.
Advanced knowledge of the safety precautions applicable to the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
Possesses intermediate knowledge of internet protocols and networked systems.
