Occupational Summary
By providing marketing operations support to Duke University Health System’s (DUHS) high-functioning marketing and communications teams, the Marketing Communications Program Coordinator plays a critical role in telling our Duke Health story, building our brand, and growing our organization. As a member of the DUHS marketing and communications team reporting to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Marketing Communications Program Coordinator engages the marketing and communications leadership team in an organized process to identify new ways to make our work more efficient, effective, and rewarding to our team members and to the patients and communities we serve.
Key areas of accountability include planning, coordinating and administering activities across DUHS Marketing & Communications areas; and developing, coordinating and advising on policy and processes related to media relations, clinical operations communications, corporate communications, brand communications and creative, website development, marketing research and analytics, physician referral marketing, integrated marketing communications, digital marketing, and consumer marketing.
Duties and Responsibilities
• (40%) Plan, research and coordinate plans to enhance current processes within department to include technology enhancements and capabilities. Train employees in proper methods and procedures and ensure correctness of work. Support team engagement, collaboration and innovation through virtual events and digital platforms and tools. Create and monitor work processes, establish best practices and a learning agenda for continuous improvement, develop RACIs, standardize policies and service agreements.
• (20%) Develop, plan and organize Department operating plan to support organizational goals with stoplight report and progress against threshold, target and stretch targets.
• (5%) Develop and plan large-scale or organizationally important events such as Duke Health-wide town halls.
• (10%) Enable marketing and communications support for teams across Duke Health and the campus by triaging requests made to CMCO, identifying or organizing resources, or arranging outside or internal resources. Be responsible for analyzing and trending data and recommending improvements. Monitor all requests to ensure we promote and protect the brand.
• (10%) Represent marketing and communications in cross-functional committees with DUHS executive sponsors.
• (10%) Represent and partner with campus, School of Nursing, School of Medicine, PDC, and clinical department communicators.
• (5%) Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, Marketing or another related field
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to think and communicate clearly, formulate a clear point of view on complicated topics, and create a concise and well-written narrative
- Second language proficiency

- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Ability to pay painstaking attention to important details
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to provide guidance and direction, including setting standards and monitoring performance
- Skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems
- Skills evaluating program performance, summarizing findings, communicating results, and forming an action plan
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources
- Ability to work quickly and under pressure, including outside of ordinary business hours
- A hands-on ability to perform and manage diverse tasks
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a range of different roles and preferred work styles
- Ability to manage a large volume of work and competing priorities
- Ability to thrive in complex, matrixed organization that values caring, collaboration and intellectual rigor
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education: Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience: Work requires three years of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.
