Job Location

Primary work location is the Duke Pain Medicine Clinic at 4309 Medical Park Drive in Durham, but could require coverage at other Duke Pain Management Clinics in Durham and Raleigh.

Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider for the Duke Pain Management Clinic.  The Pain Medicine Division delivers care across the health system using the skills of multiple specialists, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, and physical therapists.  Its breadth of six clinical pain practices treats patients along the continuum of health care needs utilizing state-of-the-art interventions.  The division's comprehensive approach is interwoven with the research mission to develop novel, non-opioid therapies for the prevention and treatment of chronic pain.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide care to patients acting as an assistant to physicians following established standards and practices 
  • Clinic location would be primarily in Durham, NC but could require coverage at other clinic locations in Durham and Raleigh
  • Provide medical services to patients, collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, and provide direct patient care services.
  • Conducts thorough medical histories, performs physical examinations, initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of pain to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan with direct review by a physician.
  • Must be able to work with autonomy and direction of supervising physician.
  • Performs routine procedures such as pain pump refills and management.
  • Provides information and answers routine questions of patients regarding pain, including preventative health maintenance topics such as diet, weight, smoking and topics related to medical specialty, with basic recommendations.
  • Educates patients regarding their pain, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
  • Assists with record keeping, completes appropriate patient medical chart, transcribes lab data and routine correspondence, as directed and reviewed by physician.
  • Refers patients to physicians as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment.
  • Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multidisciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Demonstrates compassion and professionalism and a commitment to excellent patient care.
  • Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education           

  • Nurse Practitioners:  Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants:  Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

Certification

  • BLS required.

License

  • Nurse Practitioners:  Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistants:  Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Experience

  • 1+ years of APP experience preferred.

Monday-Friday, day shift, with flexibility to meet clinic needs
