Duke University Hospital has 1,048 licensed inpatient beds and offers comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, including a regional emergency/trauma center; a major surgery suite containing 65 operating rooms; an endo-surgery center; a separate hospital outpatient surgical department with nine operating rooms and an extensive diagnostic and interventional radiology area. For 2021-2022, U.S. News and World Report ranked Duke University Hospital nationally in 11 adult specialties: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, ear, nose & throat, gastroenterology & GI surgery, gynecology, neurology & neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pulmonology & lung surgery, and urology. In addition to its hospitals, Duke Health has an extensive, geographically dispersed network of outpatient facilities that include primary care offices, urgent care centers, multi-specialty clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

Occ Summary

Provide physical therapy services to patients /clients who haveimpairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or c hanges inphysical function and health status resulting from injury, dise ase, orother causes; provide prevention and wellness services, including screenings and health promotion. The senior serves as a resource personf orthe team and the department: participates in orientation of newstaff t herapists, physicians and other health personnel. The seniorparticipates in teaching activities for physical therapy and otherhealth related stu dents. The physical therapist works within practiceguidelinesas defined by North Carolina state law.

Duties an dResponsibilities of this Level: See Departmental criteriafor each duty listed, and Departmental criteria for clinical ladder.Physical Therapist Demonstrate & articulate sound clinical reasoning in synthesizingcomplex evaluation data identifying diagnosis and developing acomprehensive plan of care.Develop and update appropriate plan of care in collaborationwi th thepatient/family and related to the person’s age and lifestyle with measurable long and short term goals and a defined D/C planUnderstandthe role of physical therapy in the context of the patient’sage, total need s perspective and environmentPerform age appropriate competency skills i n area of practice and withrespect to individual patient’s problems.Foll ow intervention protocols and alter plan of care appropriately.Dischargepatient when goals have been met or medical necessity is nolonger warra nts intervention.Establish provisions for continuing services/followup a s needed.Meet competency skills for evaluations in area of practice.Cons istently meet patient care productivity standard as established forjob c lassification.Work cooperatively with supervisors and peers to contribut e to theoverall productivity of the team.Utilize support personnel (aide s, sr aides, assistants) as appropriateand available.Actively support and participate in patient coverage efforts across alldivisions withinthe department as necessary.Assess the learning needs and capabilitiesof pat ients and caregivers.Initiate patient and family education in a timely m anner relative toage, LOS, readinessto learn, and emotional status.Util ize appropriate methods and materials for effective learning,monitoring response to education, and adapting program appropriately.Ensure that pa tient/family understands when and how to access furtherintervention.Pati ent care documentation is timely, legible, and efficient.Documentation i s concise, pertinent and meets the professions anddepartments documentat ion standards.Oral reporting is clear, concise, relevant, and timely.Per form all required data collection for the department accurately andwithi n expected time frame.Peer review standards are consistently met.Provide clinical education experiences for students as requested bysupervisor a nd established by CCCETake 1-2 students for long term clinical rotation (Therapist of > 1yrexperience).Adjust supervisory techniques for individ ual student’s needs.Provide outreach and learning activities as requeste d which may include:in-services on related topics, generating referrals, interacting withvolunteers or visitors.Participate in data collection f or research activities to enhanceclinical outcomes.Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree or certification in physical therapy, with Master's or Clinical Doctorate in physical therapy preferred.


None beyond required education, although more experience may be preferred at times.

Current Physical Therapist license in North Carolina
