Occ Summary

Th e Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of theint erdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. TheMedi cal Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative andpatientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpatients and en sure the clinic/office runs smoothly.


Work Performed

Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medical historiesand records v ital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients, and prepares patie nts for examinationsand procedures.Patient care support responsibilities may include assisting the medicaland nursing staff duringexamination an d procedures, collecting andpreparing laboratory specimens, performing b asic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electrocardiograms, rem oving sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the patient record.Ot her clinical support responsibilities include disposing ofcontaminated s upplies, instrument processing, highlevel disinfectionandsterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescriptions to apharmacy, preparin g and administering medications as directed by aphysician, and authorizi ng drug refills as directed. Performs otherclinical functions as delegat ed and supervised by the physician.Administrative responsibilities:The C MA greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appointments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, andreferral sche duling; arranges for hospital admissions and laboratoryservices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insuranceforms, handles bi lling, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollections on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinicaland clerical supplies an d forms. Performs other administrative duties asdirected.May be requeste d to be a liaison for clinic activities such as JointCommission and fall s and/or participate in clinic committees.


Knowledge, Skill s and Abilities

Good customer service skills.Workrequires the ab ility to understand and follow oral and writteninstructions generally ac quired through a high school education andmedical assistant programming. Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher andwheelchairpatien ts may be required.Working knowledge of sterile techniquesand special p rocedures that areapplicable to work performed.Workingknowledge of proce dures and techniques involved in administeringroutineand special treatme nts to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and ba sic health andsafety precautions applicable for workin a clinic setting. Workingknowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions .Age specific competencies.Daily clinic preparationprocess; registration , scheduling, chargeposting, order entry. Able to document and communica te pertinentinformationAbility to establish and maintain effective worki ng relationships withpatients and clinic staffTyping skillsMedical termi nologyLevels II and III -- Ability to independentlyseek out resources an dwork collaboratively

Minimum Qualifications


Education

Successful completion of an NCOEMS approved Paramedic Course or a United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) centered course or similar approved Paramedic Course.


Experience

Level I - Paramedic One year experience in relevant clinical areas required, Paramedic experience preferred. Level II - Life Flight Advanced Life Support Paramedic One year ALS Paramedic experience required, preferred two to three years prehospital experience with a moderate call volume (>15,000 calls/year) 911 agency. Level III - Life Flight Critical Care Paramedic Minimum of three years and current ALS experience as a Paramedic in emergency setting with a moderate to high call volume 911 agency (20,000 to 35,000 calls/year) Obtain FP-C within 2 years of hire. Degrees,Licensures, Certifications

Current certification as a North Carolina Paramedic required for all Level I Level II levels. BLS, ACLS, and PALS required. (Must obtain within 6 months if working in a hospital based department)Current trauma course preferred: PHTLS, BTLS or ITLS Applies to Life Flight Paramedic only BLS, ACLS, and PALS, required. ITLS (or PHTLS) preferred upon hire. If not, will need to acquire within the first year. NRP required within 6 months of hire. NorthCarolina Emergency Vehicle Driver certification or comparable. Current Class C driver's license Current three (3) year driving history absent of violations Level III Applies to Life Flight Paramedic only Satisfy all requirements of Level II Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) required CCP-C or FP-C certification required. PHTLS certification required within 1 year of hire. Specialty certification, i.e., FP-C, or CCEMTP required within 2 years of hire date if Paramedic is new to SCT transport Obtain TPATC within 24 months of hire
