Occupational Summary

The Duke Health and Fitness Center stands as a medically oriented fitness facility, operating within the broader framework of Duke Health and Wellbeing. We provide an extensive range of fitness and clinical programming, delivering comprehensive services to our local community. Our team of Exercise Physiologists/Specialists is seamlessly integrated into the Duke Healthcare system, enabling us to deliver secure clinical care in collaboration with the broader healthcare team.  Duke supports professional growth with continuing education support as well as access to Duke Health and Wellbeing professional training programs.  Duke Health also offers a comprehensive benefit package to support employee’s health and wellbeing. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, symptoms, and blood glucose levels, ensuring accurate documentation within Epic, Duke’s electronic medical records system. 
  • Formulate personalized exercise prescriptions tailored to clients with diverse health histories and varied goals. 
  • Deliver expert instruction in group fitness classes, both on land and in the pool. 
  • Offer individualized personal training services to a diverse client base, accommodating a range of health histories and objectives. 
  • Coordinate and lead small group exercise programming with precision and attention to individual needs. 
  • Maintain regular communication using fitness center technologies such as club Management software, Epic, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Teams. 
  • Actively contribute to internal marketing efforts by verbally promoting and cross-selling programs and services. 

Work Performed

Ensure a secure exercise environment for clients, monitoring vital signs and collaboratively communicating care plans with the complete healthcare team. Spearhead the planning, coordination, and implementation of exercise and related programs tailored to diverse special populations, clinical programs, and healthy demographics. Undertake the responsibility of creating personalized exercise prescriptions, setting goals, and orchestrating exercise progression for patients at varying risk levels—low, medium, and high. Conduct comprehensive fitness assessments for clients spanning a spectrum of health abilities. Demonstrate proficiency in instructing a variety of land and water-based group exercise classes. Provide personalized training and small group sessions, catering to both clinical and healthy populations. Function as an integral team player, contributing to optimal client care and fostering mutual support within the team.

Level Characteristics

Level I:

·         All exercise scripts have to be co-signed by higher-level ES

·         Lower risk responsibilities.

·         Significant on the job training takes place at this level.

Level II:

·         Higher level of function and autonomy, but still needs oversight. May have some “charge duty” responsibilities, but not full supervisory responsibility.

Level III:

·         Functions independently in all diagnostic / clinical tasks.

·         Higher-level function regarding program oversight.

·         No co-signatures required (unless future national policy requires EP signature.)

·         Maximum level attained without master’s degree or RCEP credential.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in exercise science or related field required.

Experience

Level I: No previous experience required. Level II: Minimum 1-year applicable experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted. Level III: Minimum 2 yrs. applicable experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Nationally recognized certification accredited by the NCCA or ISO 17024 in Exercise Science strongly preferred for all full-time positions at this location.

Level I: BLS certification Level II: BLS; ACSM certification (must attain certification within 1 year of hire) Level III: BLS (ACLS preferred), ACSM Clinical Certification as Exercise Specialist required
