$5,000 Commitment Bonus Eligible | Paid out in 2 equal installments over 12 months in 6-month increments (6 months and 12 months).

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an Athletic Trainer to provide direct and indirect care to patients at our Carolina Family Practice & Sports Medicine Clinic. 

Clinic location will either be in Raleigh, Cary, or Holly Springs. 

The Certified Athletic Trainer in the Duke University Health System serves as a physician extender in the primary care, primary care sports medicine, and/or orthopaedic clinical setting.  The Certified Athletic Trainer specializes in the delivery of high quality health care to patients of all ages and athletes of all skill levels. The Certified Athletic Trainer is certified by the Board of Certification (NATA BOC) and is licensed to practice athletic training in the state of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Training Examiners (NCBATE). The Certified Athletic Trainer promotes the Duke University Health System within his/her own entity as well as through community outreach initiatives.  The Certified Athletic Trainer within the health system serves as an integral part of the healthcare delivery team. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support physician and other clinical / ancillary staff in daily patient care. 
  • Complies with all OSHA and JHACO-issued policies and procedures.
  • Performs appropriate patient intake for a variety of medical and musculoskeletal conditions.  This includes, but is not limited to, thorough history of condition or injury, chief complaint, assessment of pain level, completion and / or review of past medical history, family history, and social history, and medication reconciliation. 
  • At direction of supervising physician, performs appropriate point of care testing.  This includes but is not limited to: UA, upreg, mono spot, rapid flu, etc.
  • At direction of supervising physician,   orders appropriate diagnostic testing or follow-up care that includes but is not limited to: xrays, MRI, CT scan, EMG, diagnostic ultrasound, rehabilitation referrals, specialty referrals, and prescription medications. 
  • Documents all aspects of evaluation, testing appropriately within the EMR. 
  • Based on patient diagnosis, current activity level and patient care plan goal, collaborates with supervising physician to:
    • Develop and teach an appropriate home exercise program
    • Appropriately choose and fit durable medical equipment 
    • Fabricate and apply custom splint or cast
    • Educate patient as to why any of the above or combination of the above is included in the plan of care 
  • Uses current best practices for concussion evaluation, which includes but is not limited to:
    • Symptom scoring via detailed clinical interview 
    • ImPACT neurocognitive test
    • Vestibular Ocular Motor Screen
    • Balance Assessment
    • Recognition of symptom clusters, clinical trajectories based on symptom presentation 
    • Collaborates with supervising physician to develop a specific concussion care plan for each patient that includes academic and physical recommendations based on clinical assessment 
  • Prepares for and assists physician with minor procedures.
  • Uses excellent written and verbal communication in all aspects of interactions with patients, patients’ families, staff,   internal and external physicians and guests of the department
  • Maintains confidentiality (HIPAA, FERPA, etc) in matters relating to employees, community members, patients, families, and visitors. 
  • Triages patient messages, phone calls and questions appropriately, whether it is resolving issue within the scope of practice or utilizing physician, nurse triage, other ancillary staff as needed to resolve question. 
  • Manages referrals to specialists, diagnostics tests in a timely manner and communicates both delays, and results/subsequent plan of care in a courteous, efficient, and patient-appropriate manner 
  • Initiates problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution to foster sound working relationships with peers/colleagues 
  • Attends mandatory full staff and clinical meetings and acknowledges receipt of and reviews minutes if absent

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or equivalent from a CAATE accredited program required.
  • NATABOC Certification (National Athletic Trainers Association-Board of Certification) is required.

JOB HOURS

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
