Occ Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care s upport partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical N urse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provid esdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit c oordination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic care andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popu lationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected t oassist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual isex pected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofev ery patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatien tcare. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policiesand pro cedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are e xpected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed,with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate ve rbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.Perform tasks within the scope of a Nurs ing Care Assistant I and II asdefined by the NC Board of Nursing.


Work Performed

Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain andr ecord patient data for medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of inf ormation collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, chan ging clothing, nailcare, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional car e as requiredto meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients .Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructedby RN and/or providers as needed.Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingposition patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreport any changes in patient's condition. Turn and p osition patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing , with appropriatetraining, document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admis sion, discharge, and transportation of patients. Followstandard precauti ons and use personal protective equipment as required.Collect, deliver a nd conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.Participate in ownprof essional development by maintaining requiredskills validation and attend ing educational offerings. Support thedevelopment of other staff andform al learners.May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over48 hou rs old.Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein. Inaddition to the NCA I duties outlined, the following duties maybeperf ormed: sterile dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old andwound irr igation; IV fluid assistance activities; oral/nasogastricfeeding;urinary catheterization and irrigation; oxygentherapy,including room set-up an d monitoring flow-rate; break up and removal offecal impaction;oropharyn geal and nasopharyngeal suctioning;tracheotomy care; ostomy care and irr igation. These additional skillswill require competency validation on hi reas well as annual competencyvalidation.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of sterile techniques and specia l procedures that areapplicable to work performed.Working knowledge of p rocedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special tr eatments to patients.Working knowledge of principles and practices of pr ovidingnonprofessional bedside patient care.Working knowledge of sanitat ion, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walkin g.This position is very active and requires standing, walking,bending,kn eeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to document andcommunicate pertinent information using computerand/or paper documentation tools.Ab ility to establish and maintain effective working relationships withpati ents and hospital staff.Working knowledge of the organizationand physica l layout of thehospital.Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.

Education

Completion of a Level I - Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC - approved Nurse Aide I competency test. High School diploma or equivalent required.

Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
